I feel fortunate that I had a rewarding corporate career for years. The positions I held were both challenging and fulfilling as I was working for companies whose missions I thoroughly believed in.

Working for myself is actually more fulfilling and sometimes downright terrifying as I discovered during COVID. Why you ask? Here are my reasons:

COVID Calories

I don’t know who needs to hear this but you do not need that cookie! It is so much easier to walk to the pantry or the fridge for yet another snack when you work from home. Food is plentiful (if you actually grocery shop) at home. And pounds pack on quickly if you don’t have a routine. I mean, one day you will have to strip off those yoga pants and put on something with an actual waistband!

Isolation

One day we were all going to meetings, negotiating over lunch and celebrating wins during happy hour and literally the next day everything came to a screeching halt. For the first two weeks of stay-at-home mandates it seems most entrepreneurs took the opportunity to step back from work and enjoy some much needed time off. For those of us that are gregarious, this entire pandemic timeline has brought angst because not only are we stuck at home but we can’t be around people which is fuel for our energy, adrenaline and creativity.

For some this angst turned into severe depression. How do you solve it? Online meetings, online happy hours, online dance parties….whatever YOU need to make you happy. Zoom and Facetime are great FREE ways to connect face-to-face virtually when you literally can’t reach out and touch someone.

Minimal Motivation

Oh, don’t mind me, I’ve just become one with the couch. I honestly think that there is a permanent indentation the shape of my a$$ on the one couch cushion I sit on. Motivation took a nose dive into the shallow end of the pool as the evil bastard Netflix continued to call my name in an attempt to distract me from work. Know what? Many days it succeeded. And that is OK as long as you get back on track.

I found that making my list of MUST DO’S, and tackling them early, allowed me to maintain some degree of accomplishment. I also adjusted my work zone to the patio which meant I wasn’t near the television. As a result I now rarely turn it on – at least until the Season premiere of Grey’s Anatomy.

What challenges did you face during COVID? How did you overcome them?

more about me

Lover of Peloton, brussel sprouts and prosecco (with a tiny splash of Pom), I ditched the stiletto heels and pencil skirts of corporate America for the business coach uniform of boyfriend jeans, wedges and cute t-shirts . One thing that remains constant is my love for flaunting my personality with bold statement jewelry pieces (and my penchant for always respectfully telling it like it is). I prefer coffee over tea, cake over pie and I rarely meet a bottle of wine I don't like. Are we destined to be besties? Hit the contact tab!
